Changi Airport and Jewel: The Layover Guide to the World's Best-Rated Airport

Changi has spent most of two decades at or near the top of the world's airport rankings, and unusually, it deserves it for reasons a traveller actually feels: short walks, fast immigration, free wifi that works, and an entire shopping and garden complex bolted onto the front of it.

If you are flying through, here is how to use it properly rather than sitting at a gate.

Is Jewel inside Changi Airport security?

Jewel Changi Airport is the doughnut-shaped glass complex attached to Terminal 1, built around the Rain Vortex, a 40-metre indoor waterfall that is the tallest of its kind. Around it climbs the Shiseido Forest Valley, a terraced indoor garden, and above that sits Canopy Park, with sky nets, mazes, a mirror maze and a bouncing net walk.

The critical detail: Jewel is on the public side of the airport. It is not in transit. To visit it between flights you must clear Singapore immigration, which means you need to be eligible to enter the country, and you need to leave enough time to come back through security afterwards.

What to do with each length of layover

Under three hours. Stay in transit. Each terminal has its own gardens, including the butterfly garden in Terminal 3 and the sunflower garden in Terminal 2, plus free movie theatres, rest areas and a genuinely good food scene at transit prices.

Three to five hours. Add a shower, a lounge or a nap in a transit rest area. Terminal transfers are quick by skytrain if you want to see more than the one you landed in.

Five to seven hours. Clear immigration, cross to Jewel, take in the Rain Vortex and Canopy Park, eat something better than airport food, and return with an hour and a half to spare.

More than seven hours. Go into the city. The MRT gets you to Marina Bay in about 45 minutes, which makes Gardens by the Bay, the bay promenade or a hawker lunch entirely feasible. Our three-day plan has the geography if you want to pick one district.

Getting into town

MRT. The station sits under Terminals 2 and 3, with a free skytrain from Terminals 1 and 4. Ride to Tanah Merah, change to a westbound train, and continue to City Hall or Raffles Place. Taxi or ride-hail. Twenty to thirty minutes outside peak hours from a well-organised, always-moving queue. Late-night and airport surcharges apply, and it is still cheaper than the equivalent run in most major cities.

Airport shuttle. A fixed-price coach service to city hotels, useful with luggage and a group.

Note that MRT services stop around midnight. Late arrivals will be taking a car whether they planned to or not.

Sleeping, showering and waiting well

Changi is built for the long wait. There are paid shower facilities across the terminals, transit hotels airside for a few hours' sleep without clearing immigration, full hotels landside and in Jewel, and rest zones with reclining seats that are free to use.

Two practical tips. First, the quietest rest areas are usually a level above or below the main concourse rather than beside the gates. Second, if you are arriving on a red-eye and cannot check into your city hotel until afternoon, a shower and breakfast at the airport is a better start than dragging a suitcase around Marina Bay at 7am.

Arriving in Singapore properly

Two things to sort before you land. Submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days of arrival, which is the single most common cause of avoidable delay at the counter, and check your passport has six months of validity. Full details are in our entry requirements guide.

Customs is stricter than most travellers expect: no duty-free cigarettes at all, and vapes are illegal to bring in or possess anywhere in Singapore.

Departing with shopping? The Tourist Refund Scheme lets eligible visitors reclaim the 9 percent GST on qualifying purchases of S$100 or more, processed at eTRS kiosks. Allow an extra 30 minutes before check-in if your items are going into the hold, because they may need inspection.

Changi Airport during Singapore Grand Prix week

There is one week a year when Changi's arrival halls feel different, and every second baggage carousel seems to be delivering team kit and camera cases. The Singapore Grand Prix runs 9-11 October 2026, and the city fills from the Wednesday.
