Festival de Cannes

What is the Cannes Film Festival?

The Cannes Film Festival runs from 11 to 22 May 2027, its 80th edition, at the Palais des Festivals on the Croisette. It is the most prestigious film festival in the world and simultaneously one of the most misunderstood by visitors, because the thing people picture, the red carpet and the premieres, is almost entirely closed. Cannes is an accredited industry event with a film market attached, not a public festival, and that single fact governs any plan to attend.

Who goes to the Cannes Film Festival?

Accredited industry: distributors, sales agents, producers, festival programmers and financiers, alongside accredited press and the talent attached to the selected films. The Marché du Film, the industry market running alongside, is the reason a large share of attendees are there at all, and many of them see very few films.

Can you buy tickets to the Cannes Film Festival?

Screenings require accreditation rather than a ticket, and accreditation is issued by category with industry and press assessed against professional criteria. The festival also operates limited schemes for cinema-goers and for young audiences, which are the realistic routes in for someone outside the industry. No fees are quoted here because none were confirmed against an official page.

What to know about the Cannes Film Festival

The premieres on the Palais steps cannot be attended by buying anything. What is genuinely open to a visitor is Cinéma de la Plage, the free public screenings on the beach, and the town itself during the festival, which is an event in its own right. Anyone travelling to Cannes in May expecting to walk into a competition screening will not, and this is the most common and most expensive misunderstanding about the festival.

Cannes Film Festival parties and side events

The festival week carries an enormous private programme: distributor parties, production company dinners, brand activations along the Croisette and on yachts moored off it, and the Marché du Film's own business schedule. Almost none of it is publicly ticketed, access runs through invitation, and Grand Circle organises none of it.

How to get to the Palais des Festivals

Nice Côte d'Azur is roughly 27 kilometres east, about 30 minutes by road outside peak, with a direct train to Cannes station a short walk from the Palais. During the festival the Croisette is congested and partly restricted, so walking or the train beats driving for anything central.

Where to stay for the Cannes Film Festival

Croisette hotels are adjacent to the Palais and priced at their annual peak during the festival, with minimum stays common. Le Suquet and the streets behind the Croisette are cheaper and walkable. Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and Nice are all a short train ride and are where a great deal of the industry actually sleeps.

Can the public buy tickets to Cannes Film Festival screenings?

No. Entry to official screenings is by accreditation, issued to industry and press against professional criteria. The festival runs limited schemes for cinema-goers and young audiences, which are the realistic routes in for anyone outside the industry.

Festival de Cannes

Is there anything at Cannes open to the general public?

Yes. Cinéma de la Plage holds free screenings on the beach that anyone can attend, and the town during the festival is an event in itself. The competition screenings and the red carpet premieres are not publicly accessible at any price.

Festival de Cannes

Who organises the Cannes Film Festival?

The Festival de Cannes organisation, which has run it since 1946. The Marché du Film, the industry market, operates alongside it. Grand Circle has no role in the festival and sells no accreditation, tickets or hospitality for it.

Festival de Cannes

Is the Cannes Film Festival the same as the Cannes Yachting Festival?

No. They are separate events run by different organisations. The Film Festival is in May at the Palais des Festivals. The Yachting Festival is a boat show held in September across Vieux Port and Port Canto. They share only the city.

What is the Marché du Film?

The film industry market that runs alongside the festival, where distribution and financing deals are done. It is a substantial part of why the industry attends, and many accredited attendees spend their time there rather than at screenings.
